Don't waste your time applying for random jobs

Job applications are a waste of time and filling out job applications is not a good way to get a job.

Don't waste your time applying for random jobs

I’ve been working on hiring a senior writer/researcher for the company I work for. We received over 300 applications so far. We reviewed 250 of them (more kept pouring in while we were in the middle of reviewing and we just couldn’t keep up). Of the 250 we determined that about 30 were qualified. I did 15 minute phone screens with those 30 applicants and determined that around 6 were hirable. We haven’t finished the hiring process, but we can only hire one of these six people

We got so many applicants because we posted our job to many relevant job boards in our industry. Also, the job is fully remote, so we had a very big candidate pool.

As you can see, though, even for the qualified applicants, the odds are not good. When you’re filling out a job application, you are probably competing against hundreds if not thousands of other people. It’s relatively easy to apply to most jobs these days. Sometimes all you have to is click “Apply” and LinkedIn will fill out the application for you. It does not take any special ingenuity to scroll through LinkedIn or some other jobs board looking for open positions. Everyone is doing this.

But don’t worry: there is a better way!
