Informational interview follow-up templates

A few examples of how you might reach out to someone after you’ve met with them for an informational interview.

The following are a few examples of how you might reach out to someone after you’ve met with them for an informational interview.

If it was a great call and they offered to introduce you to someone:

I would send this e-mail within 48 hours of the interview.

Hi [Name],

Thanks for making the time to chat [timeframe]. It was great learning more about [topic] from you. If you’re still up for connecting me with [person they offered to introduce you to], I’d love an introduction.

In the meantime, I’ll keep you posted on my journey. And please do let me know if there is anything I can do to support you with [some aspect of their work or professional life].

Best,

[Name]

Some notes:

  • If they send an introduction email, thank them right away on the original thread

  • Follow up with them (on the original thread) after you’ve met with the person they introduced you to. Let them know how it went, and thank them again.

  • If you can’t think of any aspect of their work or professional life that you could support them with, just leave that sentence off.

If they haven’t responded to your email affirming your desire for an introduction:

First, wait at least a week. Then send the following e-mail.

Hi [Name],

Just wanted to pop this back up to the top of your inbox.  If you’re able to introduce me to [Name], that would be wonderful [or some other adjective].

Thanks,

[Name]

If you aren’t that interested in them or what they’re doing, and there is no further action needed on either side:
